Farmers’ protest today, notice issued to district authoritie­s

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to Kapurthala and Jalandhar district administra­tions on a plea seeking ban on highway blockades.

In a public interest litigation (PIL), Harman Singh Sidhu, president of NGO Arrive Safe Society of Chandigarh, has sought directions to authoritie­s in Jalandhar and Kapurthala to prevent farmer unions from blocking the National Highway-1 on November 15 (Wednesday).

The petitioner said during the protest, farmers may indulge in lawlessnes­s causing threat to the public and leading to traffic chaos. The petitioner said the protesters may even try to stop the Delhi-Lahore bus.

The court was told that the DCs of both the districts have issued prohibitor­y orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

court to ban internet services in Kapurthala and Jalandhar districts for two days.

The notice was also issued to Punjab chief secretary, DGP, SSPs of two districts and farmers’ unions. The petition will come up for hearing on November 15.
