₹98L pending tax: Akali leader gets I-T dept notice
NAWANSHAHR: The income tax (I-T) department has asked the district manager of Nawanshahr Central Cooperative Bank to pay money from the bank a ccounts, FDRs (fixed deposit receipt)/RD (recurring deposit) of senior SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) leader Satinder Kaur to settle her late husband’s income tax dues worth ₹98 lakh.
The I-T department had served a recovery notice to Kaur on Tuesday as the legal heir of her deceased husband SAD MLA Jatinder Singh Kariha from Nawanshahr.The department officials said that over ₹14 lakh was recovered from Kaur’s bank accounts till Saturday. Officials said that this notice was issued pertaining to the money used in the Camelot project of the Tata Housing Development Company (THDC) by the deceased MLA.
The notice, issued by income tax officer, Nawanshahr Income Tax officer, Joginder Pal (a copy of the same is available with HT), reads, “You are hereby required under Section 226 (3) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, to pay to me forthwith any amount due from you to or, held by you, for or on account of from Jatinder Singh Kariha (deceased), through Satinder Kaur Kariha, VPO Kariha district SBS Nagar.”
The notice states, “you may subsequently hold for on account of him/her/them up to the amount of arrears still remaining unpaid, forthwith on the money becoming due or being held by you as aforesaid as such payment is required to meet the amount due by the taxpayer in respect of arrears of income-tax along with penalty and interest on fine.”As per the notice, if the respondent fails to make the outstanding payment, she will be deemed to be ‘assessee in default’ with respect to the specified amount in the notice. The remaining amount will be accorded from other sources,” Nawanshahr I-T officer, Joginder Pal said.
Satinder Kaur said that she was out of station and will respond to the notice of the income tax department.
