One-shot lead for SSP in Hong Kong
HONGKONG: SSP Chawrasia holds a one-shot lead heading into the final day of the Hong Kong Open after carding a 69 in the third round on Saturday, with Rafa Cabrera Bello and Wade Ormsby closing in on the leader to set up a nail-biting finish at Fanling.
Chawrasia entered the third round with a two-shot lead and extended it to three at one stage before being chased down after a run of seven pars.
SHAMIM LIFTS TITLE
DIGBOI: Shamim Khan overcame a challenge from Veer Ahlawat to register his second win at the Servo Masters Golf on Saturday. Shamim came through in a playoff against the 21-year-old Veer after both the Delhi-based professionals ended the regulation 72 holes with identical scores of nine- under-279. It was Shamim’s third title of the season and his 15th overall.
RITU GETS SILVER
NEW DELHI: India wrestler Ritu Phogat (48kg) clinched the silver medal in the Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship at Poland. Phogat, who had won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship last year, lost against Turkish Wrestler Demirhan in the final.
DALILA SET FOR DOUBLE
MUMBAI: Unseeded Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia is in line for a double crown at the $125,000 L&T Mumbai Open after defeating Uzbekistan’s Sabina Sharipova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the singles semi-finals on Saturday. She will face Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka who beat Amandine Hessa 6-2, 6-3 in the day’s other semi-final.
Jakupovic has already entered the doubles final with Russian partner Irina Khromacheva. On Friday, Ankita Raina was beaten 6-3, 7-6 by Hesse in the quarter-final.
NAGAL CHAMPION
BANGALORE: Sumit Nagal lifted his maiden Challenger level title after beating Briton Jay Clarke 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in the ATP Bengaluru Open final on Saturday. Nagal, ranked 321, is likely to gain more than 80 places on the ATP ranking list.
MAIRAJ WINS GOLD
NEW DELHI: India skeet shooter Mairaj Ahmad Khan won gold at the National Shooting Championship Competitions for shotgun events at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges at New Delhi. Mairaj and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa of Punjab recorded 57 out of 60 hits in the final and then went through a marathon shoot-off before Mairaj came through 26-25 to clinch gold.
