days after municipal corporation polls were held, BJP workers staged a protest near Kotwali police station here on Tuesday against the police ‘inaction’ after two workers of the party were allegedly attacked by Congressmen in ward number 48.

The victims — Amit Manchanda and Rakesh Kumar — are brothers and were coming back home at Ramanand Bagh Chowk after paying obeisance at the Golden Temple around midnight on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

“Our family members, including children and women were with us. When we reached near our home, we saw some drunk Congress workers on the way. They criticised us for supporting BJP in the polls, and started hitting both of us with karas and pistols. We suffered serious injuries on our faces and heads and we were immediately hospitalised,” said Manchanda.

BJP leader Jarnail Singh Dhot, who was elected councillor from the ward, led the protest held at the Sheran Wala Gate near Kotwali police station. Thereafter, they carried out a march from the gate to the police station. They shouted slogans against the Congress and slammed it for “hooliganism”.

He said that the two brothers were seriously injured in the attack, but the police are not registering against the accused.

In a counter-complaint lodged with the Kotwali police station, Rakesh named Iqbal Singh Sherry and his family members as attackers.

Advocate Gagandeep Singh, brother of Sherry also lodged a counter-complaint against the injured BJP workers alleging that he was manhandled by them and his turban was tossed in air, said Rajwinder Kaur, station house officer. His fellow advocates also came in his support.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP central) Narinder Singh said, “As both sides have lodged complaints against each other, we are investigating the matter to verify the allegations. We will take action only after investigation.”
