SANGRUR: Police on Wednesday arrested a man and his two aides for attempting to kill his pregnant wife by planning a fake robbery to get rid of her as he found her ugly.

The woman lost her foetus after a bullet hit her stomach. The police said Sandeep Singh (22) of Bangan village near Moonak in the district allegedly plotted to kill his wife since he found her ugly and older than him.

The incident took place near the Ghaggar river at Moonak town, around 60km from here, on January 5, when the woman (24) was attacked by her husband’s two aides while she was in a car with him.

The police said Sandeep was coming with his wife from Ratta Khera (Haryana) to Bangan and stopped for smoking to wait for his aides to come and attack his wife.

After snatching gold and money from her, the two, identified as Rajat and Surinder Sharma, allegedly shot her in the stomach and fled, the police said.

The victim was admitted to a private hospital at Tohana, Haryana, 13km from Moonak, but she was later referred to the CMC Hospital, Hisar, where her foetus was aborted and is now out of danger, said the police.

“After initial investigation, Sandeep confessed to have provided weapons to his aides to execute the crime,” said Mandeep Singh Sidhu, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

The matter became suspicious when the police found that the bullet had hit her from driver’s side and the accused did not turn up to hospital after once leaving her at Hisar,” SSP Sidhu said.

“After the attack, he drove the car slowly and waited for her death” said the SSP.

“They got married a year back and were engaged two years ago. Sandeep had developed illicit relation with various women and wanted to kill my sister,” said Sikander Singh, the victim woman’s bother.

Police have booked the accused under sections 302 (murder), 34 (conspiracy) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Moonak police station.

The police have also recovered a .315 bore pistol, looted jewellery and other belongings from their possession.
