Police on Saturday arrested an associate of Haryanvi folk singer Mamta Sharma, two days after her body was found with her throat slit in chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s native village Baniyani in Rohtak.

Mohit Kumar (27) who used to assist Mamta in her stage performances and arrange private taxis for her to commute, was arrested in the morning.

The police said Mohit and Mamta were not on good terms for the past few months, which led to Mohit plotting her murder along with his friend.

During investigation, Mohit told the police that Mamta had been scolding him over trivial issues.

He also said that she was not paying him adequately.

On January 13, Mamta called Mohit and asked him to pick her up in the morning for an event in Sonepat.

That was when Mohit saw a chance of killing her. He arranged a car from his friend Sandeep and asked for his help in killing Mamta.

On January 14, Mamta scolded Mohit again for coming late to pick her up.

During an altercation between the two while Mohit was driving, he took out a knife and slit Mamta’s throat. She died on the spot.

He then picked up his friend Sandeep, who helped him dispose the body in Baniyani village. Mohit then cleaned the car and handed it back to Sandeep.

A day later, Mohit accompanied Mamta’s family to a police station to lodge a missing person complaint.

He cooked up a story to mislead police saying Mamta voluntarily left with her friend and did not return.

“Mohit confessed to the murder during sustained interrogation. He, along with Sandeep have been arrested and will be produced in court on Saturday,” said Pankaj Nain, Rohtak superintendent of police.
