Day after worker’s death, deputy manager succumbs to injuries
PANIPAT : A day after a worker of the Indian Oil Corporation refinery, Panipat, was killed and four were injured in a blast in its naphtha cracking unit, a deputy manager succumbed to injuries on Tuesday.
The deceased, Banuji Sipana (33), posted in the catalyst unit, was admitted to Apollo Hospital, Delhi. On Monday afternoon, the workers, who were engaged for maintenance of a valve, sustained injuries in a compressor blast after highly inflammable propylene gas leaked in the refinery’s catalyst plant.
Three other injured employees — Gyan Ranjan Dutta, Ajay Tiwari and junior engineer assistant Sanjeev Kumar were admitted to a private hospital in Panipat. Their condition was said to be stable.
The kin of Mohan Lal (45), who died on Monday, held a protest at the main entrance of the refinery and demanded a compensation of ₹1 crore for his family. Mohan Lal was hired on contract basis through an outsourcing agency.
PROTESTERS CLASH WITH POLICE
The protesters also clashed with police who tried to remove them from the main entrance of the refinery. They also pelted the police with stones and continued to protest. Later, they agreed to end the protest after the management agreed to give financial assistance of ₹10 lakh to the worker’s family, ₹10,000 monthly pension besides bearing the expenses of his two children’s education.
The body was cremated at Bal Jatan village of the district.
MANAGEMENT PROMISES HELP TO DEAD, INJURED
The refinery management on Tuesday issued a press release assuring all support to the families of the deceased and injured employees. The management said an inquiry by senior officials has been ordered to find out the reason behind the blast.
The catalyst unit has been shut till the inquiry is completed.
