Anju gives Manipur fifth weightlifting gold
NEWDELHI: Arambam Anju Devi of Manipur and Bhartveer of Delhi won gold medals in the girls’ and boys’ over-69kg and over-94kg categories respectively as the weightlifting competition concluded at the Indira Gandhi Stadium on Thursday.
Anju’s gold on the final morning of the Khelo India School Games gave Manipur their fifth weightlifting gold medal of the Games.
Manipur were adjudged the top team with five gold and one silver, though Maharashtra had 19 medals, of which three were gold. There were 15 gold medals on offer in the weightlifting competition. Telengana picked two gold, while five other states had one gold each.
Bhartveer’s gold-winning effort with a combined lift of 217kg in the above 94kg class in the last weightlifting event gave Delhi its first medal of the competition, while Ashwani Tejyan (silver
medal) of Uttar Pradesh and Ashish Kumar Gorai (bronze medal) of Bihar completed the podium.
In the final event of the girls’ competition, G Gracey Sahana of Andhra Pradesh won silver behind Arambam Anju Devi of Manipur while Snehal Bhongale gave Maharashtra their 19th medal of this event, which propelled the state to second place in team standings in the sport.
Telangana didn’t feature among the medals on the final day but with two gold medals, they took the third place in team standings.
