Ivanka Trump to attend Olympics closing ceremony
Ivanka Trump will lead the US delegation to the closing ceremony of the Olympics in South Korea on Sunday, the latest high-profile visit to Winter Games that have been a hotbed of geopolitics.
The White House said US President Donald Trump had asked his eldest daughter, who is also one of his top advisers, to travel to Pyeongchang to lead up a “high level delegation.”
The 36-year-old will be joined by press secretary Sarah Sanders and is going in part because “she is something of a winter sports enthusiast,” an official said.
A senior administration official ruled out any possible meeting between Ivanka and officials from North Korea.
Meanwhile, North Korea will send a high-level delegation for the closing ceremony, officials said on Thursday.
The delegation will be led by Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, South Korea’s ministry of unification said.
Kim also heads the United Front Department, the North Korean office responsible for handling inter-Korean affairs.
He was previously chief of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, a top North Korean military intelligence agency which South Korea blamed for the deadly 2010 sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean navy corvette. AGENCIES
