JALANDHAR : In a bid to prevent mushrooming of unauthorised marriage palaces within the municipal limits, the municipal corporation (MC) has decided to cut water and power supply of 47 marriage palaces, which were found violating building bylaws and were declared illegal.

Under the marriage palaces regularisation policy, which the state government had released last year, applications were invited from the marriage palaces within and outside the municipal limits for verification.

The last date for applying for the same was December 31.

Following the verification process of the applications received, the building branch of the civic body shortlisted six marriage palaces in the city to be sealed on priority.

Senior town planner Monica Anand said applications of 23 marriage palaces were rejected as many violations were found in their structures, which could not be covered under the regularisation policy.

According to the corporation’s figures, there are currently 55 marriage palaces, including the 18 which did not apply for regularisation within the municipal limits.

So far, 8 marriage palaces have been regularised.

It has been learnt that the operation and maintenance department has been asked to first cut the water connections of five marriage palaces immediately.

The municipal corporation will also forward the list of the shortlisted marriage palaces to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) cut their power supply.

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Basant Garg has directed the building branch to send a notice to all marriage palaces shortlisted as illegal on March 1 and submit the status report on the same by March 5.
