Woman-son murder: 7 of family arrested

HOSHIARPUR : The police have arrested one Lovepreet alias Cheenu, his parents and four of his relatives in the double murder of a woman and her minor son, stabbed to death in their house at Basant Nagar here on Saturday.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) J Elanchazhian said Lovepreet alias Cheenu allegedly killed the mother-son duo to avenge his family's ‘disgrace’ by the family of the victims.

"Cheenu felt his parents had got a divorce due to victim Seema's husband Rajinder Sharma. He was also perturbed over Seema’s daughter levelling sexual harassment charges against him. He also happened to be a cousin of the girl," the SSP said.

Earlier, a case was registered at Sadar police station under Sections 302 (murder), 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code against the seven accused.

On the aggrieved family’s allegation that the police had ignored their pleas to take action against the accused party as they were fearing physical harm from them, the SSP said the allegation will be probed.

"Jalandhar zone inspector general will himself look into the matter and if any police personnel is found guilty of negligence, action will be taken against them," he said. He revealed that both the parties had filed complaints of sexual harassment against each other and probe of the same was underway.
