PGIMS to have centre of excellence in sports medicine

-

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, will soon start a centre of sports medicine for the treatment of sportspersons with injuries.

The Union ministry of youth affairs and sports recently approved the proposal to establish a Center of Excellence in Sports Medicine, Education and Research under a scheme of IISSR (Indian Institute of Sports Sciences and Research), for conducting MD and diploma courses in sports medicine at the institute in Rohtak.

At present, the facility for training programme in sports medicine exists only in five out of nearly 500 medical colleges of the country and these too were also started in last couple of years.

PGIMS vice chancellor Dr OP Kalra said, “In last few years, the number of sportspersons participating in national and international events has increased exponentially and occurrence of injuries during various sports events has become very common. Such injuries may jeopardise their careers.”

He added, “Our sportspersons have to go to foreign countries for their treatment and incur huge expenses, besides facing several difficulties.”
