DEATHS ON INDIAN ROADS

-

The unfortunate death of three young doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in a road accident has once again exposed us as a nation of apathetic and insensitive people who fail to learn lessons from past tragedies. Indian roads are increasingly becoming death traps. But I do not agree that only sever and certain penalties can deter offenders on the road. Harsh penalties may lessen the frequency of road accidents to some extent, but it will definitely increase corruption because of corrupt and inefficient traffic police. Measures to curb road accidents may include improving road infrastructure, stricter traffic law enforcement and educating drivers. Vitull K Gupta, Bathinda
