LUDHIANA:In a major embarrassment to Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) chief, MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, sleuths of the Ludhiana special task force (STF) against drugs arrested party leader Ravinder Singh Sonu, after 2-gm heroin was recovered from his flat in Dashmesh Nagar, on Friday.

Sonu, alias Sonu Jatt, is a close aide of Bains, a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) from Atam Nagar.

STF in-charge sub-inspector Harbans Singh said, “We had arrested a drug smuggler Damandeep with 50-gm on heroin on Thursday. During interrogation, he named Ravinder Singh as one of his aides. ”

Sonu had contested the recent municipal corporation elections in the city as a candidate of the LIP from ward number 48.

Congress incharge of Atam Nagar Kamaljit Singh Karwal said, “The Bains’ brothers claim to be revolutionary leaders. They have been exposed with the arrest of a party leader with drugs. Bains must answer that why does his party take in such elements.”

Councillor from ward number 48, Parvinder Singh Lapran, said the incident had exposed the LIP. “This lays bare the claims of the LIP as being a different party as hollow. If leaders start keeping heroin, what can we expect from citizens.”
