A rape case was registered at the Manesar women’s police station on Friday against a self-styled godman, who allegedly raped a newly married 19-yearold woman on the pretext of providing her treatment to ensure she has a healthy pregnancy, and to prevent depression, police said.

Police added that the incident took place when the woman was alone at her home.

The accused has been identified as Chhattarpal, a resident of Naya Gaon in Rewari district.

Police said that Chhattarpal used to visit the woman’s family often and shared close relations with her in-laws. He took advantage of this fact to gain their trust and then raped her, police said.

The case came to light on Friday, when woman’s family lodged a complaint against Chhattarpal. A case of rape was registered against the self-styled godman and police have started probe.

Manesar women’s police station Station house officer Poonam Singh said the accused is a serial offender, and he had been declared a proclaimed offender by a court in Jhajjar.

“A case of rape has been registered against the accused in Jhajjar and he had gone absconding after that case,” said Singh.

The woman, who was married nine months back was facing some issues in her marital life. She was also four months pregnant and was asked to seek help.

Police said Chhatarpal would often visit the family at their house in a village in Pataudi and came to know about the woman’s situation. It was alleged that Chhatarpal called the woman alone in a room and said he would give her his blessings and performed some rituals on her and later raped her.

The woman said she managed to escape and reported the incident to her in-laws who took her to the police station.

A case was registered under sections 376 (H), and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a man and his live in partner of two years were attacked by the woman’s former boyfriend in Sirhaul village. The 26-year old, who lives in a rented accommodation in Sirhaul, alleged that his partner and him were attacked around 9pm on Thursday by a man identified as Arjun of Bihar.

“When my girlfriend refused to marry him and insisted that she would live with me and marry me, the accused got angry and he took out a weapon and attacked us. I was hit on head and other parts of body,” the man told the police.
