FACILITY WILL BE AVAILABLE IN ALL JAILS OF THE STATE SOON, SAYS KAPTAN SINGH SOLANKI

KARNAL: Around 2,200 prisoners lodged in Karnal district jail will now have the facility of videocalling to interact with their relatives.

The district has become the first jail of the state to provide ‘inmate calling system’ for prisoners.

“The facility of video calling will help inmates feel closer to their family members,” said Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki after inaugurating a kiosk with ‘inmate calling system’ set up in the jail.

“This facility will soon be available in all the jails of the state soon,” said the governor.

However, the hardcore prisoners will not have access to this facility.

For availing the video calling facility, prisoners should take permission from the jail authorities, depending upon their behavior in the jail. They will have to pay nominal charges for the facility.

Talking to Hindustan Times, jail superintendent Sher Singh said, “The facility has been started to help prisoners talk to their family members, especially their aged parents who are unable to come to jail.”

He said the prisoners will have to register two mobile numbers of their family members with the jail authorities.

He added that Karnal jail had taken several other initiatives for its prisoners, including setting up a study centre of IGNOU, a bakery and a kiosk for the prisoners to get details about their case.
