WE CAN UNDERSTAND OTHERS ONLY IF WE UNDERSTAND OURSELVES

- PP Wangchuk innervoice@hindustantimes.com

We do try to learn about others, but how many of us try to learn about ourselves? For sure, not all of us. And that is the problem that makes us egoistic and selfish. Both these traits are the greatest self-built negative features that a human being can possess.

That would, at least temporarily, make us feel and wish: Only if we could understand ourselves before understanding others! Yes, if we use that as a mantra, every morning, it would make a big difference, and your day would pass off much better. That is because you would try to put yourself in a particular situation before settling issues of great consequences with others. You will be wiser because you will be mellower and more understanding about the others’ point of view. After all, it is not always that in any critical situation, others are wrong, and you are right. That rarely happens.

And, a person who is gentle, accommodative and yet persuasive can win over others’ heart in a manner that won’t hurt the feelings of anyone. They, too, will try their best to ‘adjust’ as much, if not more, as you do. That would be a good case of a win-win situation for both the parties.

And, what else is life all about! Taking others along on the arduous journey of life makes it not only meaningful and purposeful but enjoyable as well.
