A 52-year-old man in Karnal police’s custody was found dead on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The deceased has been identified as Jeba Singh Ram, a resident of Karnal’s Chand Saraya Colony. After the incident, three cops have been booked for murder.

A police official said that the deceased was a junk dealer and was detained by the police when found in possession of 150 gram contraband (ganja). Family of the deceased held a protest and vandalised Nehru Place police post and the Karnal police station and also damaged vehicles parked in the police station. They accused the police of custodial torture.

Police had to resort to firing blanks in a bid to control them and SDM Narendra Malik, with the help of locals, pacifies the agitators and they agreed to take the body after postmortem.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Karnal superintendent of police (SP) Surender Singh Bhoria said three cops were booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and SC/ST Act and that further investigation was on.

The SP said that on Thursday night, police got information about a dispute in the area and detained Jeba. However, he said Jeba’s health started deteriorating in custody and he was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

“The case appears to be that of custodial death and since the deceased’s family too alleged torture in custody, we have registered an FIR against three cops on the complaint of his son Naresh Kumar,” the SP said.

However, he did not disclose the names of the cops who have been booked and said that the matter was under investigation. However, the SP also confirmed that the judicial inquiry was ordered by the district authority.

Meanwhile, in the police complaint filed by Naresh Kumar, he alleged that the cops tortured his father in custody and they were also demanding ₹50,000 from them for his release. The police said the body was handed over to the family after postmortem.
