MAJOR FIRE AT AMRITSAR MILL

A major fire engulfed Rana Sugar Mill in Butter Seviyan village, around 45 km from Amritsar on Saturday. The fire started after a bundle of paddy residue spread over two acre, used as fuel in the mill, caught a spark. A cosmetic factory on Tarn Taran road in Amritsar was also ravaged in a separate fire incident.

A major fire engulfed a mill, Rana Sugar Mill, in Butter Seviyan village, around 45 km from the city, in Baba Bakala sub-division on Saturday. The fire started after a bundle of paddy residue spread over two acre, used as fuel in the mill, caught a spark, chief security officer at the mill, AR Mishra, claimed. The family of former Congress minister Rana Gurjit Singh owns the mill.

Mishra added that once the dry stubble caught fire, it spread to nearby fuel tanks. Fire brigade vehicles from Batala and Dera Radha Soami Satsang Beas were called in to douse the flames, but even after an effort of hours, the fire raged on.

“No casualty has been reported,” Mishra said.

In the second fire incident, a cosmetic factory on Tarn Taran road in Amritsar was ravaged. There is no word on the cause of fire.

FIRE IN BASEMENT OF BATHINDA MITTAL MALL

A fire broke out in the basement of Mittal Mall on Bathinda – Goniana road about 1.30am on Saturday night. A retail chain store bore the brunt. Fire tenders from Municipal Corporatio­n Bathinda and National Fertilizer­s Limited were rushed to the spot.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force were also sent to the spot. The loss from the fire is yet to be assessed. No casualty has been reported. The cause of the fire could not be establishe­d.
