Three engineers were killed and one other was injured on Saturday when a dumper ran over them at the Rasoolpur stretch of the 135-km-KundliGhaziabad-Palwal (KGP) Expressway, which is under-construction and likely to be inaugurated by month-end.

The engineers were on inspection duty. The driver, who fled the spot, was arrested on late Saturday night.

“The dumper driver, who had fled the spot, has been arrested and identified as Nazim of Nuh Mewat,” SP Palwal Waseem Akram said.

At around 11 am, two engineers of the Gayatri Constructions and two faculty members from National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, were inspecting the construction work when this incident took place, officials said.

“A recklessly driven dumper coming from Ghaziabad side first hit the parked Scorpio, which the victims had used to reach the spot and ran over four engineers, who were inspecting the work near their vehicle”, general manager of Gayatri Constructions Suresh Kumar said.

Two engineers died on the spot while one more breathed his last on his way to a hospital in Palwal. The fourth engineer is undergoing treatment. The driver of the Scorpio did not receive any injuries. The deceased were identified as Ashok Kumar Tripathi, 48, project manager of Gayatri Constructions, Ranjen Nath, 41, and Satish Kumar of NIT Kurukshetra. The fourth victim is Praveen Aggarwal.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to their families for last rites after post-mortem was conducted late last night.

“The team had gone to the spot for testing purposes when this unfortunate incident took place. We had already requested police for deployment of cops to block trucks that have started using the expressway, thereby creating problems,” said project in-charge Kishore Kanyal.
