Two Gurdaspur soldiers cremated with full honours

Havaldar Rajinder Singh was killed in an ambush by Bodo militants in Assam and CRPF jawan Mandeep Kumar died fighting ultras in J&K

GURDASPUR: Bodies of two martyrs from the district were cremated with full military and civil honours at their native villages here on Sunday.

Havaldar Rajinder Singh, 37, of 28 Assam Rifles, a resident of Kot Khan Mohhamed village, was killed by Bodoland militants in Assam while 82 CRPF Battalion jawan Mandeep Kumar, 29, of Khudadad village under the Behrampur police station in the district was killed in an encounter between militants and security personnel at Chinar Bagh village in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Havaldar Rajinder Singh was killed in an ambush laid by Bodoland militants in Dimapur of Assam on Thursday night while he, along with his other unit members, was on night patrol duty. He was cremated at his native Kot Khan Mohhamed village under the Bhaini Mian Khan police station in the district.

SDM Sakatar Singh laid a wreath on the body on behalf of the state government while military officers and jawans from the Tibri cantonment were present to offer last salute to him.

A Punjab Police contingent fired shots in the air and pointed their guns towards the earth to pay their last respects to the martyr.

His father Balwan Singh lit the pyre in the presence of relatives, friends of the family and people of the villages of the area.

Rajinder Singh,who joined the Assam Rifles 18 years ago, is survived by his parents,wife,a 13-year old son and a nine-yearold daughter.

The mortal remains of Mandeep Kumar who was killed in an encounter between militants and security personnel in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday night,were consigned to flames Khudadad village.

He was a part of the joint search operation launched against militants by the army,police and the CRPF personnel at Chinar Bagh village late at night on Friday after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

Militants reportedly opened firing indiscrimi­nately at the security personnel from the house they were hiding in killing Mandeep Kumar.

Mandeep was the only son of his parents Nanak Chand and Kunti Devi.

His parents were to go to a nearby village to see a girl for him on Sunday when,unfortunat­ely, they had to cremate his body. Mandeep had rejoined duty 10 days ago after a holiday for a few days at his native village.

SDM Sakatar Singh laid a wreath on the body on behalf of the Punjab government while a Punjab Police contingent fired shots in the air and pointed their guns towards earth to pay their last respects to the martyr before the pyre was lit by his father.

CRPF officers and jawans were present in considerab­le number,besides a strong presence of kith and kin and friends of the family and people of the area.
