NAKED DANCE OF DEMOCRACY

-

This refers to the report ‘Oppn out-BJPs Yeddyurappa’. The Karnataka chief minister resigned without facing the floor test. The governor invited the single largest party, BJP, at the behest of the Centre without caring for constitutional norms, knowing well that they will fall short of majority without resorting to horse trading. Yeddyurappa asked for 15 days to prove majority to which the governor readily obliged. But by giving the BJP to prove majority in a day, the Supreme Court foiled their plan. Madan Lal, Barnala Since 2014, the BJP government under the leadership of Narendra Modi has been working as if they can get away with their whims and fancies. This ModiShah party has been ruthlessly dismantling the edifice of our Constitution by making different institutions weak.

The latest in this series is the appointment of Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister by governor Vajubhai Vala even as the party could not face the floor test later. The party tried to get away with similar manipulations in Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Manipur with the help of its hand-picked governors. Not only this, JD(S) chief Kumaraswamy claimed that his MLAs were offered ₹100 crore each to vote in favour of the BJP during the floor test, making a hole in the BJP’s tall claims of making India corruption-free.

SK Khosla, Chandigarh Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala has done a great disservice to the constitutional post he holds. Not only did he make a terrible mistake by making BS Yeddyurappa swear in as chief minister when the latter clearly did not have a majority. Moreover, Yeddyurappa could not even face the vote of confidence in the assembly. SC Dhall, Zirakpur The whole political drama after the Karnataka assembly poll results has proved that the Supreme Court is the only and ultimate saviour of the Constitution. A governor is supposed to be the guardian of constitutional values. But in Karnataka, the BJP’s hand-picked man did everything at the bidding of his political masters in New Delhi.
