Two shepherds killed in Kurukshetr­a, 62 sheep found dead, 175 go missing

KARNAL: Two shepherds were found murdered near a railway track at Pindarsi village in Kurukshetr­a district on Tuesday morning, the police said.

The deceased have been identified as Raja Ram, 55, and Arjun Singh, 50, residents of the same village.

A third shepherd, Sandeep Kumar of Salpani village, was admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh with, serious injuries. Also, 62 sheep were found killed along the railway track near Pindarsi station and the family members of the deceased said the accused have taken away around 175 sheep from the herd of 500.

Kurukshetr­a superinten­dent of police (SP) Abhishek Garg, who visited the spot, said, “In the preliminar­y investigat­ions, it seems that the shepherds were murdered with the intention to steal their sheep. Some sheep were also found murdered on the railway track.”

He said the investigat­ions are on and the bodies of the deceased were sent to the Kurukshetr­a civil hospital for postmortem.

The SP said the district police, with the help of the government railway police, are investing the case and the actual cause of the death could only be ascertaine­d after the postmortem report. He said the police will record the statement of the injured to get any clue about the accused.

The family members of the deceased said that they did not have enmity with anybody and they do not know who killed them. “They have killed them brutally. We demand a strict police action against them,” said Isham Singh, a relative of the deceased. The shepherds, who had around 500 sheep, were camping in the open on the outskirts of the village.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Kurukshetr­a GRP police station in-charge Karam Chand said, “It seems the shepherds were beaten to death as there were several injuries on their head.”

He said that the GRP have registered a case under Section 460 of the IPC and efforts are on to arrest the accused.
