UP girl tops CBSE Class 12 exams, Ludhiana’s Astha Bamba is third

With UP girls Meghna Srivastava and Anoushka Chandra notching the first and second ranks respective­ly, students from the state dominated the CBSE Class 12 examinatio­ns, results of which were declared on Saturday.

Both Meghna and Anoushka are from the humanities stream, a CBSE official said.

Moreover, Srivastava, a student from the Humanities stream scored 499 marks, out of 500.

She scored 99 in English (Core), 100 each in history, geography, psychology and economics. Anoushka Chandra, also a student from Humanities stream, stood second with 498 marks.

Seven students, including Ludhiana’s Astha Bamba, are tied at the third position with 497 marks. Among these, four are from UP.

Bamba, a student of Humanities stream at BCM Arya Model School in Shashtri Nagar, secured 99.4% marks.

“I believe that people need to change their mindset regarding Humanities. It offers variety of subjects and has a lot of career options and this is the reason why I opted for this stream,” says Bamba.

Girls again outdid boys in overall percentage from the Panchkula region comprising Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class-12 examinatio­n, the results of which were declared on Saturday.

Girls have a pass percentage of 90.66% as against 81.85% of boys. As many as 81,136 girls appeared in the exam, of whom 73,556 passed. A total of 1,06,616 boys appeared in the exam and 87,265 of them got through.

Meanwhile, the pass percentage of both girls and boys is better than that of the last year, which was 89.60% and 79.40% respective­ly.

OVERALL PASS PERCENTAGE MORE THAN NATIONAL AVERAGE

Of the 1,87,752 lakh students who appeared in the examinatio­n from the region, 1,60,821 got through with an overall percentage of 85.66%, which is higher than the national average of 83.01%.

CBSE regional officer RJ Khanderao told Hindustan Times that the region’s pass percentage is much better than last year when 83.70% students passed the exam as compared to 85.65% this year.

J&K SCHOOLS TOP IN REGION

Schools enrolled in Jammu and Kashmir region have topped in terms of pass percentage (95.47%) in the region followed by Himachal Pradesh (89.84%), Punjab (86.33%) and Haryana (85.40%).

Chandigarh is at the bottom in the region with 79.35%. Meanwhile, out of total 110 cases of cheating reported during the exam, the region has reported third highest 16 cases, followed by Guwahati (32) and Delhi (19).

PRIVATE SCHOOLS FARE BETTER

Private schools again fared better than their government schools with a pass percentage of 86.35%. The government schools’ pass percentage is 74%. Girls studying at private schools have a pass percentage of 91 as compared to 78 in government schools.
