The air intelligen­ce unit (AIU) of the customs on Sunday seized 1.214 kg of gold worth ₹38.15 lakh from two passengers who arrived at Amritsar airport.

AMRITSAR: The air intelligen­ce unit (AIU) of the customs seized 1.214 kg of gold worth ₹38.15 lakh from two passengers who arrived at Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Ji Internatio­nal Airport in different flights, officials said on Sunday.

Commission­er of customs (preventive) Dipak Kumar Gupta said: “In first case, a passenger coming from Dubai in an Air India Express flight was intercepte­d by the AIU when he crossed the green channel without declaring any dutiable item. On frisking, it was found that the passenger was hiding raw gold coated with Rhodium, weighing 299.5 gm worth ₹9.41 lakh, in the form of a round object worn under the sleeve of his shirt. The gold was seized and the flyer arrested.”

In another case, a passenger coming from Delhi in an Air India flight was intercepte­d and on his search, the AIU recovered 24 karat 12 gold biscuits. The gold biscuits weighing 914.40 gm and worth ₹28,73,959, bore foreign marking, said Gupta. The biscuits were hidden in his socks.

The passengers have been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigat­ion is under process,” he said. Gupta didn’t disclose the names of the accused.
