Book cops for abetment to suicide: Amritsar woman’s family

-

AMRITSAR : A day after a 52-yearold woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance during a police raid at her house to nab her younger son, Jodhbir Singh, who is accused of theft in Gajiwal village, 45 km from here, her family has demanded the registration of an abetment of suicide case against the raiding cops.

Deceased Charanjit Kaur’s elder son Sarwan Singh said her mother took the extreme step due to the ‘harassment and highhandedness’ of the cops, who raided his house. He said there were around 15 cops , led by SHOs of Beas and Mehta police stations, who abetted the suicide of his mother. He said they approached the police but no FIR was registered by the police.

He said his mother, sister-inlaw Jaskiran Kaur and her 5-year-old son were present at home while he and his father Jarmanjit Singh had gone for some work in Rayya when the police came to conduct a raid.

“After reaching the house, the police started harassing the family members. They also tried to force them into their car. But, neighbours intervened. My mother warned the police that she will take poison if they continued the raid, but the cops ignored the warning, thus abetting her to commit suicide,” he said.

DSP REFUTES CHARGE

Baba Bakala DSP Lakhwinder Singh, however, said police had arrested a few persons on Saturday and her son Jodha was named during investigation, due to which police raided the house to arrest him. He said the team didn’t harass the family members. The DSP said they are not taking action against the cops as Charanjit took the step due to shock at her son’s activities. HTC
