HISAR: Police have booked Olympian boxer Jai Bhagwan for allegedly manhandling and slapping a woman inspector of the excise and taxation department during inspection of a liquor vend in Laxmi Vihar colony in Hisar on May 19.
Jai Bhagwan, an Arjuna awardee, is currently posted in the Haryana Police as CIA inspector at Fatehabad. He also lives in Laxmi Vihar colony.
On May 19, Jai Bhagwan had called up Hisar deputy excise and taxation commissioner (DETC) SS Siwach and asked him to inspect the liquor vend in Laxmi Vihar that was allegedly functioning illegally.
The DETC sent excise and taxation inspector Neelam Sharma to inspect the vend. Sharma reached the spot along with her husband at about 9 pm and Jai Bhagwan asked her to show the necessary documents related to the vend.
When the woman official informed Bhagwan that the vend has been set up as per the state excise policy and is not illegal, Jai Bhagwan and some other persons allegedly manhandled her, slapped her and made her captive for more than one hour in her official car.
Later, Neelam Sharma took up the matter with her seniors, who further wrote to Hisar deputy commissioner (DC) Ashok Kumar Meena, seeking action against Jai Bhagwan.
DC Meena also directed Hisar superintendent of police (SP) Manisha Chaudhary to look into the matter and initiate appropriate action.
On Tuesday (June 12), the Hisar police booked Bhagwan under Sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
However, Jai Bhagwan has denied the charges and said all allegations levelled against him are baseless. The boxer added that he is ready to join investigation.
OFFICIAL BOOKED FOR MISBEHAVIOUR WITH BOXER’S MOTHER
Meanwhile, inspector Neelam Sharma and her husband have also been booked by the police on the complaint of Jai Bhagwan’s mother, who accused the duo of misbehaving with her, using filthy language and threatening to kill her on the same day (May 19).
Complainant Birmati Devi, 62, said she was standing outside the Laxmi Vihar vend when Sharma and her lawyer husband Narayan Dutt Vats misbehaved with her. Sharma and her husband have been booked under Sections 166 (public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person), 109 (abetment, if the act abetted is committed in consequence, and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 294 (obscene act), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
