A retired executive engineer of the public works department (PWD), Bhatnagar had gone to Canada on April 19 and was to return to India after six months, his younger son Arvinder Singh said.

Arvinder said his father and elder brother Jaspinder Singh used to go for a night walk regularly. But on June 12 night, his father went out before his brother, he said.

He said when Jaspinder went out to join his father, two black youths aged around 15 tried to snatch his mobile phone on his way but he resisted. In the meantime, his father also came there.

Arvinder said after scuffling with his brother, the teenagers also pushed his father, who fell down with his head hitting the ground, as a result of which he fell unconscious.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died on Thursday. The Canadian police have arrested one of the accused and are looking for his accomplices.
