1 hurt as two groups clash in Gurdaspur central jail

: A major clash broke out among prisoners at the Central Jail in Gurdaspur on Thursday. Police say around 60 inmates were involved in the ruckus.

As per informatio­n, inmates of barrack number 7 used to beat up others in case they entered ‘their area’, following which, a cold war ensued between other inmates and those of barrack number 7. On Thursday, around 10.30am, the inmates of other barracks attacked the inmates of barrack number 7.

The two groups threw bricks at each other. An inmate was injured and rushed to the civil hospital. Three undertrial­s were shifted to the Amritsar jail and two to Kapurthala jail after the clash. Sandeep Singh, facing trial under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC; Karamjit Singh alias Fauji facing trial under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and Gurmit Singh were shifted to the Amritsar jail

Ashwani, under trial for murder and Nelson Masih facing charges under Section 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act were shifted to the Kapurthala jail.

As the clash broke out, the jail’s alarm went off and the authoritie­s brought the situation under control.

Superinten­dent of police (detective) Harwinder Singh, accompanie­d by deputy superinten­dent of police Ripu Papun Singh and other police officers rushed to the jail and helped the jail staff control the violence.

Gurdaspur central jail superinten­dent Karamjit Singh Sidhu said that there were around 30 persons in each of the two groups that clashed, but it was brought under control and normalcy returned to the jail soon after.
