Tale of drunkenness, bizarre twists

- ROHIT VATS

SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER 3 Direction:Tigmanshu Dhulia Actors:Sanjay Dutt, Jimmy Shergill, Mahie Gill Rating:

It’s a little strange to see Sanjay Dutt embroiled in a plot that feels more like a TV soap, everyone scheming against everyone else, and hamming it up as they do. It’s even more odd to think that this is the work of director Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 is meant to be a political thriller, but totally fails on that front. It is, in fact, a lesson in patience, as it drags on and on and tosses its star cast about in a sea of Drunkenness, bizarre plot twists and painful song sequences.

Aditya Pratap Singh (Jimmy Shergill), the king who was jailed in part two, is out and trying to reclaim his political legacy. His queen Madhavi (Mahie Gill) is still scheming behind his back. After some twists and turns, he meets a London-returned Rajasthan prince named Uday Pratap Singh (Sanjay Dutt), and that begins a whole new chain of events.

Gill’s conniving queen act is absurd. She swirls, screams and spills her drink, with no method to her madness. Blaring speakers announce Baba’s return but the excitement of that soon peters out. Kabir Bedi and Deepak Tijori’s characters are so thin and loud that one wonders whether Dhulia was under pressure to finish each scene in one take.

What could have been a Shakespearean tale of ghostly estates, treacherous relatives and dejected princes with a thirst for power instead becomes a rut of everyone trying and failing to drag down everyone else. The dialogue is meant to be gritty but feels forced. The lack of complexity or even basic character arcs leaves the actors struggling to stay afloat.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 feels as dated and out-oftouch as the obscure ‘royal’ traditions they go on about in the film. You will likely leave with what feels like a niggling headache, and the odd thing is, despite its slow pace, you won’t be able to remember a single scene.
