Neeraj qualifies for Diamond League final

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the prestigiou­s Diamond League Final, which will be held here on August 30.

Reigning CWG champion, Chopra, finished fifth in the Rabat leg of the Diamond League series earlier this month, with a best throw of 83.32m. He collected four Diamond League points and made it to the Final along with five other athletes.

Current world champion Johannes Vetter, Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, 2017 IAAF Diamond League champion Jakub Vadlejch, German champion Andreas Hofmann and Estonian record holder Magnus Kirt have also qualified.

WOMEN ARCHERY TEAM TOPS WORLD RANKINGS

KOLKATA: The Indian women’s compound archery team made history by scaling to the top of the world rankings in the recently published chart.

With their twin silver medal winning effort in the Antalya and Berlin World Cups, the women’s compound team lead the chart with 342.6 points, six points ahead of second-placed Chinese Taipei.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Muskan Kirar were two regulars in the team in both World Cup stages, while Divya Dhayal (Antalya) and Trisha Deb (Berlin) were the third members.

SANIA SETS SIGHTS ON 2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS

DUBAI: Ace Indian player Sania Mirza is hopeful of hitting the tennis court for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She, who is in the family way, is out of action .

“We are still in 2018 and my goal is obviously to try and come back to 2020 Olympics,” Sania said in a recent interview to Gulf News. “It’s a realistic goal to set because it will be the end of the year after I have my child,” she added.

BENGALURU FC TO FACE BARCELONA’S B TEAM

BANGALORE: Bengaluru FC will be up against the reserve teams of Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Villarreal in their pre-season friendly matches.

“We’ve got some big news coming in! The Blues are off to Spain for a pre-season that includes games against @FCBarcelon­aB and @Villarreal­CF B. Stay tuned!” Bengaluru FC wrote on its twitter handle.

JEHAN CLAIMS POLE TO FLAG WIN IN FORMULA 3

SPA (BELGIUM): Indian driver Jehan Daruvala completed an exhilarati­ng pole to flag victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championsh­ip here Friday. Formula 1 hopeful Jehan also had the fastest lap to his name in race one of the weekend at the legendary Spa Francorcha­mps circuit.

The teenager began setting lap times with only five minutes left for the session to end.

SOURABH TO MEET MITHUN IN SEMI-FINALS

VLADIVOSTO­CK (RUSSIA): India’s Sourabh Verma and Mithun Manjunath will face each other in the semi-finals of the Russian Open here on Friday.

Sourabh defeated Israel’s third seed Misha Zilberman 21-14, 21-16. Mithun defeated Malaysia’s S Ramachandr­an 21-18, 21-12.
