Nawanshahr govt school revamps classes to attract more students
A Gosal-based government primary school had come up with a child-centric curriculum and innovative classrooms for pre-primary students under the ‘Khed Mahal’ initiative launched by the state education department as part of ‘Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab’ scheme.
With only 39 students in 2016, the school now accommodates 68 students along with 14 pre primary students. Under the ‘Khed Mela’, the teachers have designed theme-based calendars to make learning more fun. The new classrooms are equipped with laptop, projector, themed walls such as solar system, maps, shapes, numbers and alphabets.
Head teacher Mandip Kaur said that they channelised funds through significant community support and assistance from village panchayat and NRIs.
An elementary teacher training (ETT) Kamalpreet Kaur said that donations to the tune of ₹5 lakh were received from panchayat, locals and NRIs to develop this ‘first of its kind’ state of the art infrastructure.
“Besides this, another UKbased NRI, Kamaljit Singh Gosal, had donated ₹1.50 lakh for the school. Soon, the school will have a student-friendly recreational park”, said Mandip Kaur adding that, “When I joined the school in September 2016, there were 39 students in the school. With door-to-door campaign and active community support under ‘Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab’, a drive was launched to increase enrolment. The parents were made aware about facilities, infrastructure and quality education.”
“Presently, the school has 68 students and pre-primary class has 14 students,” she said, adding, “The school had achieved A grade and has been placed among the top 20 schools of district.”
