: Normal life was affected in around 65 villages of Yamunanagar, Karnal and Panipat districts of Haryana as the water from the swollen Yamuna river entered these villages, situated on the low-lying areas.

Over hundred families of various villages were evacuated with the help of boats and thousands of acres of standing crops were still under water.

Meanwhile, there were reports that water has started receding by the Sunday evening. The water flow at the Hathini Kund Barrage in Yamunangar declined to 1.25 lakh cusecs by Sunday evening from 6.05 lakh cusecs on Saturday night. The officials said that it may recede further with the passage of time.

However, the water that has entered into the fields will take some days to recede and it may damage paddy, sugarcane, maize and vegetables in these districts in the Yamuna belt.

KHATTAR CONDUCTS AERIAL SURVEY

Talking to mediapersons in Karnal, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “I have conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas. Flood water has affected crops in 10 to 12 villages and it has also entered in the residential areas of 8 to 10 villages in Yamunanagar district.”

He said he has ordered a ‘special girdawari’ of the affected areas to assess the damage caused to crops by the flood water.

The CM said the affected farmers will be adequately compensated. The affected farmers who have got their crops insured would be given compensation through the ‘Fasal Bima Yojana’ while those who had not opted for it, would be paid compensation by the government, an official statement quoting Khattar said.

CM HOLDS EMERGENCY MEETING

Meanwhile, Khattar also held an emergency meeting with senior officials in Chandigarh. He directed the officers to stay alert to deal with any untoward situation in the districts through which the river flows.

During the meeting, the CM was informed by the officials of Panipat, Sonepat and Palwal districts that though the Yamuna river in these districts was flowing close to the danger mark, the situation was under control and there were no reports of loss to life or damage to property.

YAMUNANAGAR ADMN ON ALERT

The officials in the Yamunanagar district said the situation was being monitored closely and rescue teams were put on alert.

The district administration had sounded a high alert on Saturday after the water flow in Yamuna river crossed the five lakh-cusec mark.

As many as 36 villages, including Kalanaur, Lal Chappar, Sandhali and Sandhala, were affected due to flood water as thousands of acres of crop were under water for the past 24 hours. The authorities said the water will recede in the next few hours.

When contacted Yamunanagar deputy commissioner (DC) Girish Arora said, “No threat to life was reported and the flood water has already started receding.” The road traffic on the Yamuanagar-Haridwar highway was affected as the road was flooded with the river water.

A police post in Kalanaur was also inundated.

The situation was under control in Karnal, DC Surender Dahiya said. “The water has affected 14 villages, including Nagli, Shergarh Tapu, Sayeed, Randoli, Kamalpur Gadrian, Japti Chapra and Dera Halwani villages of the district.”

He added, “Water has started receding and the connectivity will be restored in next few hours.”

In Panipat, flood water has affected about 14 villages in the low-lying areas and residents of Rahimpur Kheri village were evacuated to safe places.

Panipat DC Sumedha Kataria said, “Only a few families of Rahimpur Kheri village were shifted. The district administration is keeping a close vigil on the situation.”
