A 41-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after setting his wife and two children on fire at Kanjibans village of Yamunanagar district on wee hours of Sunday. The woman died on way to PGIMER, Chandigarh, and the children were hospitalised with 20% burn injuries.

The police said that the incident took place around 3am when Subash Chandi, a truck driver, poured petrol on his wife Banto Devi (40), an anganwadi worker, son Avtar Singh, 16, and daughter Baljinder Kaur, 14, and set them on fire. He later committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance.

While his wife succumbed to injuries on way to PGIMER, Chandigarh, his son and daughter were admitted to the Yamunanagar civil hospital. The children were reportedly in a stable condition.

Police said Subhash originally belonged to Jugian village of Patiala district in Punjab. Banto, whose parents had died in an accident , was adopted by her maternal uncle Jagmal Singh who lived in Kanjibans village . After their marriage about 17 years ago, Subhash had shifted to Jagmal’s house.

Jagmal told police that there was dispute between the two and he never saw them fighting.

However, the police officers associated with the investigation said the family dispute seems to be the reason behind the incident.

Talking to HT, Chappar police station in-charge Ramesh Chand said the police have registered a case under Section 174 CrPC and started investigations.
