Woman’s suicide: Two cops booked for helping accused

Inspector, SI are accused of trying to tamper with suicide note and destroying evidence

three years after a woman had committed suicide for alleged failure in repayment of money owed to her, the Ranger Nangal police have registered a case under against two police officials who tried to support the accused. However, the prime accused in the case, who owed the victim a sum of ₹91.50 lakh, was held by Mohali cops on Saturday.

The matter dates back to 2015, when a resident of Greater Kailash Locality, Balwinder Kaur lodged a complaint with the police and stated that her sister, Paramjeet Kaur, had given ₹91.50 lakh to her family friends, identified as Kulwinder Singh and his brother Davinder Singh, on interest.

She then told the police that the accused refused to return money and neither paid any interest on it. She added that her sister had threatened the debtors that if her money is not returned, she would commit suicide in front of their house. AndonDecem­ber20,2015, Paramjeet committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance in front of their house at Shahbad village, which falls under Ranger Nangal police station. Divulging details, Ranger Nangal SHO, Harkrishan Singh, said that the victim accused Kulwinder and Davinder of her untimely death in her suicide note.

“Subsequent­ly on Balwinder Kaur’s statement, the police registered a case against, inspector Chandan Singh, who was then station house officer at civil lines police station, and sub-inspector Parkash Singh was then the in-charge of Simble police post,” said Harkrishan Singh.

“The officers tried to tamper suicide note, destroy evidences and registered the case at civil lines police station than Ranger Nangal police station to facilitate the accused,” he added.

Following this, victim’s sister, Balwinder, ordered for thorough probe in the matter and the Ranger Nangal police registered a case under 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc, of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 201 (causing disappeara­nce of evidence of offence, or giving false informatio­n to screen offender), and 120-B (unishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the police personnel, who are absconding .

VICTIM’S SISTER HAD SOUGHT A PROBE

On May 7, 2018, the local court had declared inspector and subinspect­or as proclaimed offenders and order the Ranger Nangal police to register a case under Section 174A and subsequent arrest. Ranger Nangal SHO added the prime accused, Kulwider Singh and Davinder Singh were also arrested by the police from Mohali on Saturday.
