NEW DELHI : A six-year-old girl was raped allegedly by an electrician in her school in New Delhi district on Wednesday. Police arrested an electrician who was employed at the municipal school where the girl studies in Class 2.

A six-year-old girl was raped allegedly by an electrician in her school campus in New Delhi district on Wednesday.

Police on Thursday arrested an electrician who was employed at the municipal school where the girl studies in Class 2. He had allegedly taken the girl to a pump house built in the primary section of the school to rape her.

Hundreds of parents gathered at the school, located near Connaught Place, on Friday, and staged a protest demanding the safety of their children. An additional force remained deployed to ensure law and order all through the day.

Four employees of the New Delhi Municipal Council, which runs the school, were suspended.

These included the headmaster, a class teacher, an assistant engineer and the accused. The police said that between 1.30 and 1.50 pm on Wednesday, the electrician, identified as Ram Ashrey, who lives in Dwarka, took the girl to the pump house when he spotted her leaving the premises.

After sexually assaulting the girl, Ashrey told her not to talk about it with anyone. Leaving the girl at the pump house, he then fled. She then went to the van, which used to ferry her and other children to the school and back, said a police officer who asked not to be identified.

On Thursday morning, the child’s mother noticed that she was bleeding.

The parents approached the school authorities the same day and the police were called, the officer added.

“We got a call on Thursday around 1.30 pm. The medical examination of the girl confirmed the rape.

The girl was then counselled and her statement was recorded.

She told us that a man wearing a red T-shirt took her to the pump house. On being shown pictures of all the staff and teachers of the school, she identified Ashrey. He was arrested the same evening,” he said.

The police said that the man joined the school a month ago and the police verification of his antecedents was underway.

Joint commissioner of police, New Delhi, Ajay Chaudhry, said that a case has been registered under sections 376 for rape under Indian Penal Code as well as the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act .

“The electrician has been sent to jail and the case is further being probed,” Chaudhry said.

When the police inspected the school, no cameras were found in the common areas such as the lawns, entry gate and at the pump house where the crime took place, said Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police, New Delhi.

A senior official at New Delhi Municipal Council, which runs the school, said that immediate disciplinary action was taken against other staff as well.

“The services of the junior engineer who had employed the electrician has been terminated. The assistant engineer who headed the staff, the head master, the class teacher who was employed as an assistant teacher, and the accused have been suspended from duty,” the NDMC officer said on condition of anonymity.

On Friday morning, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson, Swati Maliwal, asked Delhi Police to submit an action taken report.

The National Human Rights Commission has also taken suo motu cognisance and issued notices to Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi, and Commissioner of Police, Delhi, calling for a detailed report in matter within four weeks.
