GURUGRAM: The crime branch of the city police has arrested two criminals, including a mostwanted gangster, after a shootout on the Dwarka Expressway on Friday at around 1.15 am, said the police.

The accused — identified as Amit Dagar, and Anil alias Lath — allegedly were members of Kaushal gang, which has been operational in the city for over a decade. The alleged kingpin of the gang, Kaushal, is on the run.

Gurugram police had announced a reward of ₹1 lakh in the past, while Kaithal police had kept a bounty of ₹5,000 for information on the gangsters, leading to the arrest of Dagar.

The police said Dagar and his aide, Anil, who hails from Kakrola in Delhi, were arrested on Friday after a shoot-out near Dhanwapur Chowk in Rajindra Nagar.

The accused were produced in the district court, on Friday evening, and sent to the police custody for four days.

A case has been registered against the accused under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act, said the police.

Inspector Sajjan Singh, crime branch, Sector 10 police station, said Dagar received a bullet wound on his right knee in the crossfire.

“After a tip-off that the criminals were on their way to the city, a police team had set up a barrier on an approach road. When the accused spotted the police, they tried to escape by ramming their i20 car into the police barricade,” said Singh.

The accused then got out of their car and opened fire at the policemen, firing four shots.

“The police too fired four shots in retaliation, one of which hit Dagar on his right knee. Both were arrested after a brief chase. No policeman was injured,” said Singh, officer in charge, crime branch, Sector 10 police station. Dagar was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said Dagar was number ‘two’ on the list of most-wanted gangsters in Gurugram, and was also the main operating hand of the gang.

Kuhar said Dagar, a school drop-out and resident of village Naharpur Rupa, was a historysheeter.

Allegedly, he has several cases of murder, extortion, contract killing and vehicle theft registered against him in both Gurugram and Kaithal.

“Preliminary interrogation has revealed that Dagar had committed at least eight murders after he came out on parole in 2016. After coming out of jail, he had been involved in extorting money by targeting property dealers, businessmen and bookies,” said Kuhar.

“Two pistols, one foreign-made and one country-made, three live cartridges, and an i20 car were seized from the accused,” said the police.
