SI who saved Muslim youth from mob to be awarded on Aug 15

-

minister Trivendra Singh Rawat will felicitate 40 policemen this Independence Day, including sub-inspector (SI) Gagandeep Singh, who fought a mob to save a Muslim youth from getting lynched in May this year.

The officers would be awarded for their commendable and outstanding service.

SI Gagandeep, currently deployed at Nainital district, would also be awarded with ‘Sarahniya Seva Samman Chinha’ for his outstanding work. Besides, he would also be given cash award.

On May 22, Singh braved a mob of more than 250 people and saved a Muslim youth from being attacked at Nainital district’s Ramnagar town after he was allegedly found with a Hindu girl in a local temple.

Singh’s act was shot by someone on mobile phone; the video went viral, winning him accolades from across the country and world. Reportedly, the incident took place near Garjia Devi temple in an isolated area, about 15 km from Ramnagar town. The Muslim youth had gone to meet the Hindu girl whom he claimed to be his friend.

However, some locals caught them and alleged that they were found in a compromising position, and later called members of Hindu right wing organisations who started thrashing the youth.

A police team that rushed to the spot tried to pacify and disperse the mob even as SI Singh escorted the youth away from them. But when, some angry activists started shouting and assaulted the youth, Singh shielded him by embracing him and taking the blows from angry activists.
