Phagwara clash: Three granted bail

THE CLASH TOOK PLACE BETWEEN DALITS AND MEMBERS OF RIGHTWING HINDU ORGANISATI­ONS OVER RENAMING OF A CHOWK

PHAGWARA: Three Hindu rightwing leaders arrested in connection with the Phagwara Clash have been granted bail by the high court (HC), here on Saturday.

President General Samaj Manch (GSM) Vijay Sharma said that Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Samiti leader Sushil Kumar Tinka and Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader Sunny Batta have been granted bail while another Hindu leader Jimmy Karwal got an anticipato­ry bail in the case.

Sharma further said that they will also apply for the bail of other Hindu leaders, who were arrested and were recently shifted to Pathankot jail, including Shiv Sena state vice-president Inderjit Karwal, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Samiti state president Deepak Bhardwaj, Shiv Sena leader Shivi Batta and Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader Rajiv Chahal.

THE CLASH

On April 13, the clash took place between Dalits and members of right-wing Hindu organisati­ons over renaming of Gol Chowk to Samvidhan Chowk.

A Dalit teen, Yashwant Bobby, got critically injured and later succumbed to bullet injuries on April 29.

A case under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 295A (hurting religious sentiments), 392 (robbery), 353 (assault), 186, 427, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act, the National Highways Act along with Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against the Hindu leaders.
