-

HOSHIARPUR: Two students of government senior secondary school, Khuas Purhiran, allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a moving train on the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar track near Singriwala at 8.40am on Tuesday.

The boy, a student of class 10 was resident of Purhiran while the girl, who studies in class 9, used to live in Kirti Nagar. The bodies have been sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.

The families of teenagers claimed they had no knowledge if their children were in a relationship, but GRP inspector BS Randhawa said circumstantial evidence indicated a suicide pact between the two. The police said no one noticed the youngsters jumping before the train as the area was away from habitation. said GRP assistant sub inspector Hardip Singh, who took the bodies to the civil hospital for autopsy.

The girl’s father said she was his adopted daughter. “My wife died about nine months ago and after her, my daughter used to take care of me. She would cook food for me before going to school,” he said. “Today also, she prepared food for me and left for the school. I don’t know why she took such an extreme step,” he said. The boy’s parents are also in a shock. His father said his son had never spoken about the girl who died along with him. School principal Ramandip Kaur could not be contacted.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
