Two snatchers drag elderly woman for 80-ft, arrested

AMRITSAR: The police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the snatching bid case, in which two bike-borne men had dragged an elderly woman for around 80 feet while trying to snatch her purse in Amritsar’s posh area Ranjit Avenue on August 23, and arrested two persons with 1,050 intoxicant pills.

The accused have been identified Rajbir Singh aka Money, 27, of Kot Khalsa and Amritpal Singh aka Shallu, 30, of Guru Arjun Dev Nagar in Amritsar.

Harijot Virdi, a resident of Block A of Ranjit Avenue was returning home from a nearby market when the bikers targeted her. As she resisted, the snatchers dragged her up to 80 feet distance on the road. The entire incident was recorded in the CCTV.

Addressing a press conference at Civil Line here, deputy commission­er of police (DCP) Jagmohan Singh said, “After the incident, panic was spread in the area as the woman had received serious injuries.” He said for arresting the accused, a special team was formed.

“The team examined the footages of the CCTVs installed in the area to identity the accused,” he said.

tablets from their possession,” he said.

“After the arrest of the accused, the investigat­ion team formed to trace the case confirmed the identity of the accused came to know that the duo was involved in the Ranjit Avenue’s snatching bid incident,” said the DCP.

He said besides confessing snatching bid crime, the duo told the police that they are drug addicts and were under the influence of drugs while committing the crime.

He said Rajbir Singh had been working in a call centre while Amritpal Singh is a taxi driver. “We have also recovered the bike which was used in the crime from the accused. It was stolen bike,” he said.

The DCP said a case under Sections 22-29-61-85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances Act had been registered.

The accused were already booked under Section 379 B (snatching by force) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonme­nt of the IPC.
