SANGRUR: Police have arrested two persons for allegedly murdering Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) worker Charanjit Garg and his wife Pooja in Sangrur on Tuesday. Garg and his wife were stabbed multiple times before being shot dead near Government Ranbir College in the town on Saturday night.

The accused have been identified as Pradeep Sharma and Anupam Kumar, alias Pompy, former Congress municipal councillor.

Police on Sunday registered a case of murder against Rakesh Sharma, his brother Pradeep, Jaidev Jojo and Pompy. The main accused, Jassi, who owed ₹5 lakh to Garg, and his accomplice Jojo are still at large. SSP Sandeep Garg said during interrogation, the accused said that Garg was murdered over a monetary dispute. “Jassi was reluctant to return the money. The accused said both Jassi and Garg had several meetings to settle the dispute, but to no avail,” the SSP said. He said the police were also looking for call details to see whether they had any conversation on the day of murder. Police have launched a hunt to arrest Jassi, the SSP said.

“After Garg and Jassi had heated arguments over phone a few days ago, the accused started following Garg and were aware of his evening schedule,” an official said. Family members told the police that Garg , along with his wife and children, used to go out for dessert after dinner. On Sunday, he got late and took along his wife, leaving the children at home,” the official said.
