The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) won’t give two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar a direct entry to the World Championships in Budapest from October 20-28.

Instead, the Commonwealth Games champion will have to qualify by taking part in the national selection trials later this month. “We had exempted him from trials (before the Asian Games) because he gave us an assurance of winning gold. Since he hasn’t performed up to expectations, we won’t give him direct entry this time if he is keen to compete in the world meet,” said Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the WFI president. Sushil lost his opening bout in the men’s 74kg at the Asian Games in Jakarta.

“We might give direct entry to Vinesh and Punia for the worlds, but in other weight categories trials will be held,” said Brij Bhushan.

KAKRAN HITS OUT AT DELHI CM KEJRIWAL

Wrestler Divya Kakran, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Games, vented her frustration at CM Arvind Kejriwal by telling him that she could have won gold had she got assistance from the Delhi government.

“I won medal in CWG and you called me and assured me when I asked for help to prepare for Asian Games but it did not come. I gave in writing, but even my phone was not picked up,” Kakran told Kejriwal. The Chief Minister said she wasn’t wrong. “There were several shortcomings in the sports policies of Delhi. We have made several efforts to reform them. All our policies were stopped for one or other reason at higher level,” he said adding that after the Supreme Court’s July 8 verdict, his government was able to take decisions on administrative matters. Kejriwal informed the wrestler that Delhi government last week had amended its policy and substantially enhanced the cash incentives for medal winners at international events.
