CHANDIGARH: The Supreme Court collegium has recommended names of four lawyers as Punjab and Haryana high court judges to the Centre, out of the 11 names forwarded by the high court collegium in November 2017.
Those whose names have been recommended are Manjari Nehru Kaul, daughter of former Punjab and Haryana high court judge justice RK Nehru’s (retd), Punjab government additional advocates general, Harsimran Singh and Manoj Bajaj; and Arun Kumar Monga.
The SC collegium, which met on September 4, deferred its decision on the recommendation of lawyers Sukant Gupta, Sanjay Vashisth, Jasdeep Singh Gill, Mansur Ali and Sunil Kumar Singh Panwar, while the proposal for appointment of two more lawyers Deepinder Singh Nalwa and Harsh Bunger, was not discussed by the collegium.
The proceedings of the SC collegium was chaired by chief justice of India Dipak Misra and attended by justice Ranjan Gogoi and justice Madan B Lokur.
The proceedings say the decision was made after “perusing opinions from both the chief ministers and the governors for the states of Punjab and Haryana and consultation of judges who are well conversant with the affairs of Punjab and Haryana high court”. The high court has a strength of 50 judges, including chief justice Krishna Murari. The last appointments were of six judges in July 2017.
