MC sanitation workers protest against MP for outsourcing work
JALANDHAR: Fourth grade sanitation employees of the Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation Union here staged a protest against member of Parliament (MP) Santokh Singh Chaudhary for outsourcing various development works in the city.
During the rally called by the Congress against fuel price hike, the workers led by federation president Chandan Grewal, raised slogans against the MP for ignoring their concerns.
“For the past four years, MP Chaudhary has never addressed the long-pending issue of recruiting us with the municipal corporation (MC) but favours for outsourcing workforce for development works,” said Grewal.
Notably, in the press conference held in Circuit House last month, MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary had announced that the civic body will be outsourcing 50 sanitation workers for carrying out the cleanliness work at night, that was carried out earlier with the help of sweeping machines.
The sweeping machine project worth ₹30 crore, meant for cleaning main roads of the city, was recently scrapped by the civic body alleging corruption.
“The agenda for recruiting another 535 sanitation workers were cleared by the House last year but instead of recruiting us, our MP is promoting privatisation,” he claimed.
The cleanliness workers further alleged that the Mohalla Sanitation Committee, which was disbanded by the former SAD-BJP government so that cleanliness works would be carried out by regularised workers, is still active in Phillaur.
