3 killed in roof collapse in SBS Nagar, Amritsar

SBSNAGAR: Three persons, including a man and his son, were killed in incidents of roof collapse due to heavy rain in SBS Nagar and Amritsar districts in the last 24 hours.

In SBS Nagar, a 35-year-old man and his 13-year-old son died while his wife and other son were injured seriously after the roof of the room they were sleeping in collapsed on the intervenin­g night of Saturday and Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Mohan Mahato, a labourer and a native of Bihar, and his son and Garjesh Mahato. The family worked in a poultry farm at Chuharpur village. They stayed in a room on the premises of the poultry farm for the last four years.

His wife Sheela (33) and son Khemraj (14) were taken to the civil hospital and were said to be out of danger.

As per informatio­n, the roof collapsed around 1am. After getting informatio­n, a police team rushed to the spot and brought the victims out of rubble.

The police said the bodies will be handed over to the family members after post-mortem.

In the Angarh area of Amritsar city, a worker died after the roof of a sawmill where he was working collapsed after continuous rain on Sunday afternoon. The victim was identified as Ranjit Singh alias Laddu (42) of Jalal Usma village.

ADCP-city 1 Jagjit Singh Walia said the deceased worked in the mill owned by Pankaj of Amritsar. “Ranjit got buried in the debris. Locals somehow managed to take him out and rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.” “We have asked the people staying in vulnerable or unsafe buildings to shift to some safer places to avoid any untoward incident,” he said.
