ON THE BASIS OF A COMPLAINT FILED BY VICTIM’S BROTHER, POLICE BOOKED HER HUSBAND, HIS BROTHER AND SISTERINLAW

A man was arrested on Thursday after his 29-year-old wife allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Bangheri village of Khizrabad block in Yamunanagar district.

The deceased has been identified as Rita, who hailed from Alisherpur Majra village of the district and was married in Bangheri. On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s brother Ajay Kumar, police have booked her husband Rajneesh and in-laws on charges of dowry death. Ajay said Rita had married Rajneesh around a year ago. Her husband and in-laws started harassing her for dowry a few months after the marriage, he alleged.

He said Rita disclosed the matter to her parents and they approached the women police station in Yamunanagar. Her husband then assured the police that they will not harass her any longer, he added. “Following their assurance, we sent Rita back to her in-laws’ house. But a few days later, they again started harassing her. On Monday (September 24), I got a phone call from Rajneesh, who told me that Rita has consumed poison and she has been rushed to a private hospital in Yamunanagar,” Ajay said in the complaint.

Rita died during treatment at the hospital, following which Ajay filed a police complaint against her husband Rajneesh, his brother Gurmail and Gurmail’s wife Rimpy for harassing her for dowry. Police said an FIR has been registered against the accused under Sections 304 B and 34 of the IPC and investigations are on. Khizrabad police station in-charge Lajja Ram said that in the preliminary investigations, it was found that the woman had allegedly committed suicide as she was being harassed for dowry.
