Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday said that search is on to locate Kashmiri student Ehtisham Bilal, who went missing after leaving his university campus in Greater Noida on Sunday.

Police said that as per reports Bilal’s phone location was traced in Kashmir.

“The actual missing report has been field in Greater Noida. We are in touch with police there. There are reports of his location in Kashmir. It has not been ascertained as yet. We are making efforts to search him,” said station house officer of Khanyar police station, Parvez Ahmad.

A first-year student of Bachelors in Medical Imaging Technology at Sharda University, Ehtisham left the campus on October 28 and told his family in Khanyar in Srinagar on phone that he was going on a sight-seeing trip to Delhi.

Earlier in first week of October, Ehtisham was mistaken as an Afghani and roughed up by a group of Indian students who had earlier clashed with Afghan students of the varsity.

The family and relatives of Ehtisham held a sit-in protest at Press Colony in the city centre at Lal Chowk seeking the governor administration’s help to trace their son’s whereabouts .

The J&K police have also been looking into people who have been visiting Ehtisham here, north Srinagar superintendent of police Sajad Shah said on Wednesday. Shah said that he was not certain if there could be any ‘militancy connection’.

“I don’t think but who knows for sure,” he said adding, “Bilal was friends with Fahad Waza who later joined militancy and was killed in an encounter at Fateh Kadal on October 17.”

The SHO Parvez Ahmad said that so far no militancy connection has come to fore.

Bilal Ahmad, father of Ehtisham said that he was clueless about any reasons into the disappearance of Ehtisham. “I have no idea,” he said.

“On Sunday morning, he told me he was going to Delhi for an outing and in the evening at 4:30pm he shared his whereabout and said he was waiting to board the metro. Later, at 6:30pm, when I called him again, his phone was switched off,” Bilal said.

He said the issue was resolved amicably when he went to the campus and decided not to file a case owing to mistakes of some students.Meanwhile, Ehtisham’s mother made passionate appeals in a video on social media saying he should be allowed to go if he is with anybody.
