Curfew continues in J&K’s Kishtwar

continued for the third day in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Saturday, which was imposed after BJP leader and his brother were killed by suspected terrorists on Thursday.

However, the curfew was lifted from Doda town on Saturday.

Kishtwar district magistrate Angrez Singh Rana said, “We have relaxed curfew from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and then from 3.45pm to 4.45pm.”

There was no untoward incident during the relaxation in two phases.We will review the situation on Sunday and give more relaxation depending on the situation.”

Rana said prohibitor­y orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) remain imposed in Padder and Chatroo sub-divisions of the district.

“There was no untoward incident from the two sub-divisions on Saturday and the situation remained peaceful,” he added.

Rana said security forces, including army remain deployed in the town.

“Army is continuous­ly conducting flag marches in the town. The situation is returning to normalcy,” he added.

On Saturday, the governor’s adviser K Vijay Kumar visited the town and chaired a meeting with the director general of police (DGP) Dilbag Singh, divisonal commission­er Sanjeev Verma , principal secretary (home) RK Goyal and top officers of the army. Kumar also met the leaders from both the communitie­s .

About the unidentifi­ed gunmen who killed the BJP leader and his brother, Rana said a SIT has been constitute­d and the report is awaited.

“However, the two PSOs (Om Parkash and Sahil Kumar) remain detained. They are being questioned,” he added.

A top police officer, however, said there were some leads in thecase suggesting that the murder was carried out by the militants.

The SIT headed by the Kishtwar additional superinten­dent of police has been set up to probe the murders.

Doda district police chief Shabir Malik said, “Curfew was lifted from Doda town on Saturday and the situation remained peaceful. In Bhaderwah town, the curfew was relaxed from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. There was no untoward incident during the period.”

“During relaxation some local leaders, around a dozen, paid tributes to the slain BJP leader and his brother. We are keeping a watch on the situation,” he added.
