District administrations on Saturday handed over appointment letters for government jobs to five relatives of the Iraq terror attack victims from Jalandhar and Kapurthala.

The state government in April had announced compensation of ₹5 lakh and a government job to families of the 27 Punjabis killed by state militants in Mosul city of Iraq in June 2014.

From Jalandhar — Manjeet Kaur, widow of Dawinder Singh of Chak Desh Raj; Kamaljeet Kaur, wife of Roop Lal of Nakodar village; Amandeep Kaur, wife of Kulwinder Singh of Khanke village and Veena, sister of Sandeep of Nakodar village — were handed over the job letter by Jalandhar deputy commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma.

Kapurthala based Amandeep Singh, 21, who lost his father Gurbinder Singh in the incident, said, “It is good that the government is finally thinking of us and giving us the promised job.” Kapurthala DC Mohammad Tayyab said appointment letter was given to Amandeep as he had completed all formalities, while one Phagwara based family will get the appointment letter soon.

DC Varinder Kumar Sharma said six families affected in the terror attack belonged to Jalandhar.

Remaining two families will be given the jobs promised by local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on April 2 with the completion of documentation.

He said apart from the financial assistance of ₹5 lakh from the state government, the central government has also given ₹10 lakh ex gratia to each family.

Jobs will be given to the victim’s kin as per their qualifications, he added.
